A Word for Our Arbor Family
If someone had asked me years ago, “What is prayer?” I probably would have said, “Prayer is talking to God, like you talk to a friend.”
Now, I say, “Prayer is conversing with God—the King of kings—knowing that I am His beloved child.” That gives prayer a very different perspective, doesn’t it? Three things that have changed in my prayer life are:
In prayer, I try to remember who I am talking to. God and I are not on the same level. He is God, and I am not! Yet, when I ask Him, He graciously brings me into His perspective. He gives me His wisdom, His expectations, and even His heart. I get to exchange my limited view for His far greater one (Isaiah 55:8–9).
My identity is in Christ alone. I come into God’s presence as His treasured daughter and a “coheir with Christ” (Romans 8:17). He listens, speaks, and loves me as His child.
That’s what prayer is growing into for me. As I bring my questions and concerns to Him, He hears me and answers in ways I’m still learning to recognize and understand.
In Luke 18:1, Jesus tells His disciples a parable to show them that they “ought always to pray and not lose heart.” I will never stop coming to Him in prayer.
I hope you’ll come to Him today. He is waiting to converse with you, too.
