 This Is How I Fight My Mammon 

We can very easily misuse what God had entrusted to us by letting wealth (Mammon) rule our hearts. In Luke 16:1-15, Jesus’ parable of the dishonest steward shows that we can fight the reign of Mammon in our hearts by using earthly money to make an eternal impact in people’s lives. We do that by being generous with people in a way that points them to God.

But Mammon is very deceptive, it promises security but instead breeds anxiety and worry. Jesus warns, “You cannot serve God and mammon” (Luke 16:13). How do we make sure we are serving God and His provision (money)? Generosity. By giving to what God wants us to give to, we loosen mammon’s grip and align with God’s heart. Scripture shows that Godly people, from Abel, to Abraham to the early church (Acts 2:44-45), fought mammon by giving freely. God is the ultimate Giver and sent Jesus to pay our debt. It’s because of that Gift that we should be able to give anything away that He asks us to.

Everything we have is God’s (Psalm 24:1). As stewards, not owners, we fight mammon by using money, time, and talents for eternal purposes. The shrewd steward in the parable used resources to build relationships (that resulted in eternal homes), and Jesus urges us to do the same, investing in God’s kingdom. Small acts of giving build faithfulness and eternal joy and also weaken mammon’s hold on our hearts.

This week, fight mammon by giving something away. Whether it’s money or resources, give to the church or to someone in need. Pray daily to align your priorities with God’s, trusting His promise to provide (Matthew 6:33). Let’s choose God over mammon, reflecting His generosity in all we do.
